In February 2024, an 86-year-old local resident turned to the police of the Kalininsky district of St. Petersburg with a statement about fraud. As it was established, phone scammers called the pensioner and reported that someone was trying to steal money from her account. Under the pretext of keeping her savings safe, the attackers convinced an elderly woman to transfer 200 thousand rubles allegedly to a "safe account".
On this fact, investigators of the SU of the Territorial Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia opened a criminal case on the grounds of a crime under part 2 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
As a result of a complex of operational search measures, employees of the Department of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation for the city of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region tracked down three local residents who provided technical support to scammers who deceived an 86-year-old pensioner. They turned out to be two young men aged 17 and 19, as well as an 18-year-old girl.
The accomplices were detained by the police on April 24 of this year. As operatives established, their direct duties were the maintenance of special equipment, through which fraudsters changed their phone numbers.
The police found and seized three GSM gateways, over a thousand SIM cards of various mobile operators and many bank cards at the places of residence of the assistants of telephone intruders.
The criminal investigation continues. Prior to the election of a preventive measure, the identified defendants were detained in accordance with Article 91 of the Code of Criminal Procedure of the Russian Federation.
