An Australian court sentenced Catherine Nguyen to a prison sentence of two years and three months for stealing 100,000 XPR in January 2018. She became the first person involved in such a case in the country's history, according to Information Age .

The court brought the charges in October 2018. Nguyen pleaded guilty in August 2019. In October 2021, she will be eligible for parole.

Judge Chris Craigie called her decision "difficult and depressing" and stressed that she was described as a "generous and hardworking" person.

“A criminal is always ready to help others. The committed crime is not typical for Nguyen, her moral convictions were distorted at the time of the theft , ”he said.
The case file says that in January 2018, she and an accomplice hacked into the mail of a 56-year-old namesake using SIM swapping and stole his assets. At the time, XRP was trading at an all-time high of $ 3.84.

Later, Nguyen transferred the tokens to one of the Chinese cryptocurrency exchanges and converted them into bitcoins, which she then distributed among several wallets.

In 2019, the police raided Nguyen and seized computers, phones and money. Using the stolen funds, the convict opened a business to repair designer bags and shoes.

We will remind, earlier the 17-year-old Twitter hacker was charged 30 charges. He faces up to 200 years in prison in the United States.
