Port Phillip Prison was forced to suspend visits to inmates following a cyberattack.

Anonymous hackers have taken control of Port Phillip Prison's Internet network, forcing the authorities to tighten security measures. While the police are investigating the cyberattack, the prisoners are not allowed to visit. Both face-to-face meetings and video calls are prohibited. Only social workers and lawyers have access to phones.

Police and the government's Victorian Cyber Incident Response Team have been notified of the hack.

A spokesman for G4S, the operator of Port Philip, confirmed the cyberattack on the prison's systems. The Victorian Department of Corrections and Prisons said Port Phillip was experiencing "network issues" that limited communication with inmates.

“Victoria Correctional Services is currently working with G4S to ensure that these issues are resolved as quickly as possible,” a department spokeswoman said. “The safety of employees and staff is not in danger.”
